SOUTHERN IMAGERY AND
I moved to Franklin, North Carolina as a sophomore in high school, and I also spent my university years in North Carolina. Fourteen years ago, I moved to Marietta, Georgia.
My paintings are influenced by my Southern surroundings, which form a basis for the surreal and otherworldly feel of the artworks. When I started my paintings in “The Garden Series,” I knew that ghost stories, romances, antebellum mansions and Civil War stories would fit into the scenes I painted.
I feel that stories make us who we are. Southern culture provides a deeply rooted sense of history, tradition, and many stories to share. The South sets the stage for my own symbolism and stories.
Just as stories invite us into another world, I feel that my paintings explore an inner world of the imagination. I would use the word enchanting to describe my paintings. They are like taking refuge in a peaceful Southern garden or in a place so magical that we escape reality for a while.
